2011-2012
SKILLSUSA CHAMPIONSHIPS TECHNICAL STANDARDS

Last year we
changed the technical standards to be valid for two years. These standards are
the result of many hours of work from a collaboration of industry partners,
subject matter experts and SkillsUSA staff who worked diligently to create a
user-friendly product. The standards provide our chapters and students with an
up-to-date official competition guide for both the 2011 and 2012 SkillsUSA
Championships. We will post changes to any of the contests on our website on the
"Contest Updates" page.???

The CD-ROM
package, including the standards, an information piece, a poster and the 2011
contest projects, can be purchased for $19.95 through the SkillsUSA online
catalog at: http://www.skillsusa.org/store/contests.html.
Contest singles cost $10.95 each and include the 2011 contest project (if
available) as well as helpful hints from some of our technical committee
members. If you purchased the two CD-Rom package last year, you need only
purchase the 2011 Contest Projects as a single CD for $15.95 ea.

We are also
offering a 606-page, perfect-bound book version for $32.95, plus shipping and
handling. To purchase this printed version through the online catalog, look
beneath the listing for the CD-ROM package and locate the blue and yellow "LuLu
button." This button will take you to LuLu.com to place
your order. To further our efforts to produce more eco-friendly materials, we've
chosen LuLu to deliver this on-demand printed version. Delivery time is
approximately three to five days, depending on the selected delivery option.
Please be advised the book version of the technical standards does not contain
the 2011 SkillsUSA Championships contest projects.

DATES FOR THE
2012 NATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND SKILLS CONFERENCE REMINDER -- MARK YOUR
CALENDARS

Because Kansas
City will be hosting the Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in 2012 and the
schedule conflicted with the annual conference schedule, SkillsUSA has agreed to
move the National Leadership and Skills Conference up by a couple of days in
2012 only. State Following is the revised schedule for NLSC
2012.

48th
NLSC - Kansas City, Mo - June 23-27, 2012.
So, the 2012 NLSC schedule
will be from Saturday to Wednesday. This means the Opening Ceremony will
be held on
Monday, June
25, the SkillsUSA Championships will be held Monday and -Tuesday, June 25-26,
and the Awards Ceremony will be held Wednesday, June
27.

2011-12
MEMBERSHIP KITS AND FREE SKILLSUSA ADVISOR MEMBERSHIP
INCENTIVES

The 2011-12
SkillsUSA membership kits have been mailed to all chapters that affiliated with
SkillsUSA last year.

When advisors
register at least 20 student members plus one or more professionals by
November 15, 2011, advisors will receive a free copy of
Leveraging Your Leadership through Effective Chapter Meetings. This brand new
resource from the SkillsUSA Educational Resources Catalog teaches how to improve
attendance at meetings, ideas for large or small chapter meeting programs, the
basics around developing an agenda and meeting room set-up, plus the value
behind holding meetings. This tool is ideal to assist in preparing chapter
officers to truly lead chapter meetings (value: $15.00).

Also,
instructors who submit a roster with 100-percent membership plus one or more
professionals will also receive a SkillsUSA Program of Work calendar (value:
$5.95).

Remember, the
membership roster must be submitted online or postmarked by November 15th to
receive these free items.

STUDENT2STUDENT
MENTORING PROGRAM WEBINAR

On November 1,
please participate in a webinar on SkillsUSA's national Student2Student
Mentoring Program. Discover how this program can help you accomplish many
chapter goals such as performing community service or helping to endorse career
and technical education. Use this program to help SkillsUSA support the
America's Promise Alliance and use the hours to help students qualify for the
President's Volunteer Service Award. Doing a Student2Student mentoring project
can also help your chapter attend the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills
Conference in June.

LOWE'S
COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT AND COMMUNITY REBUILDING GRANTS
REMINDER

SkillsUSA is
pleased to announce a continuing partnership with Lowe's for 2012. As part of
its overall grant to SkillsUSA, Lowe's will be awarding grants to local chapters
of up to $25,000 each for Community Improvement and Community Rebuilding Grants
in 2012.

Grant
applications must be submitted by November 1, 2011. Lowe's will
be reviewing the top applications, as submitted by a SkillsUSA staff committee,
and selecting the chapters to receive the funding. Notification of successful
applicants will be in January of 2012.? Projects may be implemented during the
spring or fall semesters in 2012 and must be completed by November 30, 2012.?

In the
selection process, student leadership is the key component. The best projects
will be students identifying a school or community need, developing the solution
and actively participating in the implementation. Applications should tell the
story behind the project idea as well as having sufficient data and facts to
support the implementation and completion.

In addition,
CareerSafe Online training vouchers to promote safety among technical students
will again be available under the Lowe's grant in 2012.?

If you have
questions on the grant program, please contact Lowe's grants manager, Carol
Lowery, at 641-512-0504 or 641-456-4515 or
clowery@skillsusa.org.

For more
information and to reach the online application, go to the
